Crocheting help! How do I work a certain number of stitches for edging?

I am working on a pattern that calls for a certain number of stitches around the afghan so I can work a ruffle like edging. The afghan has 98 rows of dc and there are roughly 122 stitches across the top and the bottom of the afghan. I have to work 119 sc across the top, 167 sc down one side, 119 sc across the bottom in the free loops, and 167 sc up the other side. Is there an easy way to do this since I haven't done it before? What would be a good way to mark the spaces (like every ten or twenty) so I can make sure I counted correctly and I don't have to keep recounting over and over? Any help or ideas to reduce the frustration would be appreciated.

to get 119sts from the 122 sts you sc28, sc2tog,sc29, sc2tog,sc29,sc2tog, sc29. this should decrease the sts to 119. Then down the side of the 98 rows you need increase by 69sts which means you work 1sc into first row end, then **2dc into each of the next 5 row ends, work 1sc into next 2 row ends**, and then repeat from ** to ** to end this should give you 167 sts. Hope this helps. Contact me if you need any more help. Been crocheting for over 45 years.
Reply:ok if you only need 119 and have 122 stitches you just have to skip 3 stitches randomly in the middle I suggest doing one in each side and one in the middle. then for the sides you need to do about 2 stitches in each stitch. (I didn't really do the math) but you will have about 2 stitches for each space (2 for each dc)
