How long before my dreadlocks are tight?

I have had them for about 2 1/2 months - and i have very long (mid back length) straight, thick, white girl hair.





Most of them are coming together, but I notice I get a lot of loops and flaps that I have to crochet them through so that the flaps set down.





Also, it's normal for the roots to sometimes get caught together, right?
