Burda pattern - What is hook and loop fastening tape?

I'm doing a burda pattern for the first time (#9828) and on the notions list it didn't call for hook and loop fastening tape, however the first instructions for the pocket says to stitch hook and look fastening tape under the edge.

This is for a pocket for a baby - it looks like it's something that closes the pocket (maybe?) is this necessary?

The most common hook and loop tape found here in the US is the Velcro brand. You will want to get the sew in type of Velcro, which you can find in craft and sewing stores, as well as chain stores like WalMart.

I'll paste a link for you below what it can look like (there are color options available, too, not just beige):

Another option you'd have to close the pocket would be snaps, although for safety reasons, I'd either use the one's you need a snap setting tool for like this:

, or stick with the velcro.

The sew-on snaps could come off on baby clothing and might present a choking hazard:

This is also the reason why you should avoid buttons on baby items, toys etc.

Hope this helps.
Reply:the hook is the stiff part aka the male...the loop which is softer is aka female...in the sewing world....just wanted to add that little extra info....
Reply:It's velcro, but pattern companies aren't supposed to list name brands. Good luck with your project!
Reply:Velcro, hook and loop tape, is an easier way of closing a pocket smoothly than say a row of little snaps or buttons and button holes.

For the jacket it isn't totally necessary, but will give a strength to the pocket.

Enjoy your baby!! Let the dust bunnies grow as babies grow too fast!
Reply:its called Velcro
Reply:it's velcro. You could also use a snap. It might not even be necessary at all, unless the pocket would gap open to much without some type of closure.
